Today is the summer solstice, the point at which the sun reaches its highest position in the northern sky and the night is at its shortest, according to Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

In Helsinki, daylight lasts 18 hours and 56 minutes, with sunrise at 3:54 and sunset at 22:50. In Utsjoki, the sun does not set at all.

The exact moment of the solstice occurs at 11:24 Finnish time, the astronomical association Ursa reports.

After today, nights will gradually grow longer as Earth’s tilt shifts away from the sun.
