Man dies after falling through glass railing on balcony in Vantaa

A man in his 30s died on Friday evening after falling from a fifth-floor balcony in Vantaa’s Tikkurila district, Itä-Uudenmaa police report.

The man fell through the glass panel of the balcony railing to the ground below. Emergency services attempted resuscitation, but he died from his injuries.

Police received the report shortly after 9 p.m. and are investigating the incident. Authorities do not currently suspect foul play.

In March 2023, a woman died in a similar fall through a glass balcony railing in Tikkurila, though in a different building. Following that accident, around 2,000 balconies were ordered out of use after inspections revealed the glass type used did not meet point-load requirements. A later investigation found the balcony structures had been widely approved for various construction projects prior to the incident. Prosecutors ultimately determined there was insufficient evidence to prove the railing solution violated laws or building regulations in force at the time.
