The first batch of salmon smolt has arrived at Bakkafrost’s new facility in Skálavík, the Faroe Islands’ largest of its kind, state broadcaster KVF reports.
Some 1.8 million smolt, sourced from Iceland, were unloaded, disinfected, and transferred to holding tanks this year. They will remain there for approximately three months before being moved to larger pens.
Bakkafrost operates multiple supply sites in Iceland, alongside its own production, to mitigate disease risks. The Skálavík facility, now nearing completion, is designed to produce 7.5 million smolt annually. It features five halls, with smolt housed in each for three months, totaling a 15-month growth period before sea transfer.
