Faroese telecom providers will be required to store communications data for one year starting 1 March next year to assist in the investigation and prosecution of serious crimes, according to a legal notice reported by Faroese broadcaster KVF.

The Danish directive on data retention and storage, currently under consultation in the Faroe Islands, allows the Danish justice minister to set detailed rules after discussions with the local government. The measure aims to give police investigative tools critical for solving and prosecuting serious offences.

Exemptions apply to broadcasters, political parties, trade unions, religious communities, and other associations providing services to fewer than 100 members.
