Finnish defence forces sergeant sentenced for fraud and misconduct
A Finnish Defence Forces sergeant has been sentenced to 60 day-fines for payment fraud and four counts of service-related offences, Yle reports.
The non-commissioned officer, who worked at the Defence Forces’ General Staff, was dismissed after repeatedly violating workplace rules and misusing a government-issued payment card for personal expenses, including karaoke bars and restaurants across Finland.
Court documents show the misconduct began in January 2024, when the sergeant used the card—intended for official duties—for private purchases such as taxi rides and hotel stays. Despite a formal reprimand, the behaviour continued, with 21 unauthorised transactions totalling just over €500 charged to the state.
In early 2025, the sergeant also faced disciplinary action for tardiness, negligence, and unauthorised absences. The Defence Forces deemed the conduct a breach of professional duty, justifying termination. The sergeant, a career NCO with over a decade of service, admitted to the charges in district court, citing personal issues. The ruling is final.
