The rector of the University of Oulu, Arto Maaninen, has resigned from his position and terminated his employment with the university for personal reasons, the university announced in a statement.

His departure follows a review by the university board of his suitability to continue in the role, prompted by his alcohol use and inappropriate behaviour at a university staff event.

“This is a surprising and unfortunate situation. However, this decision ensures that the University of Oulu upholds its values and ethical principles,” said Leena Nissilä, chair of the university board, in the statement.

The board approved his resignation effective immediately in a meeting on 16 June. It will begin the process to fill the rector position in August. In the interim, Petteri Alahuhta, vice rector for partnerships, has been appointed acting rector starting 16 June until a permanent replacement is in place.

Maaninen took office as rector in early 2025. His appointment drew attention when three board members resigned shortly after his selection, though they did not publicly disclose their reasons.
