Särkänsilta opens in Tampere after criticism and delays

The new Särkänsilta pedestrian bridge in Tampere, connecting Mustanlahden harbour to the Särkänniemi amusement park, will open on 18 June, according to a report by Yle.

The two-pronged steel bridge, part of a project to develop Särkänniemi into a year-round destination, has faced criticism for obstructing heritage vessels and undergoing design changes. Originally planned with dual branches at both ends, the final structure splits only at the Särkänniemi side, with one branch leading to a new gate and the other toward Näsinneula and the Sara Hildén Art Museum.

Construction included child-friendly peek-through windows and a ship-like steel underside reflecting Näsijärvi’s waves. Cycling is prohibited for safety, though bikes may be walked across.

Despite early opposition—including a municipal initiative demanding an independent review of costs and planning—the bridge received final approval. Administrative court rulings ensured sufficient space for heritage vessels, while a separate decision overturned a €26 million development grant for Särkänniemi.

A planned main entrance near the bridge was scrapped, leaving a secondary “Sataman portti” (Harbour Gate) as the new access point. Officials estimate 25% of visitors will use the bridge.
