Residents in Copenhagen’s Nørre Quarter staged a protest on Thursday against plans to convert two buildings in Studiestræde into a hotel exceeding 10,000 square metres, DR reports.

The Nørre Quarter Residents’ Association argues the project, in an area known locally as “Pisserenden,” would overwhelm the neighbourhood with tourists, bringing constant disruptions from luggage, deliveries, waste collection, taxis, and pressure on the few remaining local shops.

According to tourism industry outlet Turistmonitor, the buildings—Grundtvigshus and KAB’s former headquarters—are slated for conversion from office to hotel use. Copenhagen Municipality has granted administrative approval for the change, despite the city council recently voting to halt new hotel developments in the Inner City.

The association claims short-term rentals and hotels already threaten the area’s local character, criticising the municipality for ignoring illegal conversions of office spaces into unofficial “shadow hotels.”
