Police suspect the driver of a car was speeding excessively in a collision that killed a young moped rider in Lappeenranta on Monday evening, Yle reports.
The crash occurred around 9 pm on Terminaalinkatu, a straight section of road in the Mustola district, a popular gathering spot for youth. A car struck the moped from behind.
Investigation leader Kimmo Vasara said the area has a 50 km/h speed limit and that witness statements and evidence suggest the car was travelling well above it. The driver, also a young adult, and a passenger in the car were uninjured.
Police have not yet questioned the driver but have interviewed the passenger and young witnesses. Authorities suspect the driver of endangering road safety and gross negligent homicide. A forensic investigation into the cause of death is also underway.
Investigators have video material related to the incident. Police previously stated that alcohol or drugs were not factors in the crash.
The case will be updated later this week, according to Southeast Finland Police.
