Rescuers in Hamina freed a swan family on Wednesday after the mother became trapped by her neck in a garden fence, local emergency services reported to Yle.

The Kymenlaakso rescue department received a report in the afternoon of swans walking on a road in Hamina. On arrival, they found the mother swan’s head caught in a mesh fence bordering a residential property, with six cygnets and a distressed male swan nearby.

Firefighters released the swan and guided the family to the nearby Kirkkojärvi nature reserve. Station master Samu Mattila of Hamina fire station said the operation required coordination, including using vehicles to block the swans’ path and direct them toward safety.

The rescue ended successfully when the male swan rejoined the family.
