Arvi Lind, the longtime face of Finnish public broadcaster Yle’s news and a national symbol of reliability, has died at 85, the broadcaster reported Tuesday.

For nearly four decades, Lind anchored Yle’s evening news, becoming far more than a newscaster to generations of Finns—he was an institution, embodying stability in turbulent times. Viewers often described his presence on screen as reassurance that “the world was still turning,” no matter the crisis.

Those who met him in person recalled Lind’s uncommon warmth and humility. He treated everyone, from schoolchildren to soldiers, with the same genuine interest, leaving lasting impressions. Daniel Telén, then a high school student, approached Lind at a 2008 event in Mynämäki hoping for an interview. Instead of dismissing the young reporter, Lind stood, shook his hand, and introduced himself simply: “Terve, Lindin Arvi” [“Hello, Arvi Lind”]. He not only granted the interview but recorded a closing line for the school radio broadcast in his signature voice: “Tässä kaikki tältä erää, hyvää illanjatkoa ja kuulemiin” [“That’s all for now, good evening and goodbye”].

To conscript Timo Rautiainen, Lind was “one of the guys” during a 1980s military base visit, eschewing celebrity to connect with young soldiers. “He made such an impression that we all wanted to be Arvi’s friends—even outside the news,” Rautiainen said. For Anu Kaarnavaara, Lind’s 8:30 p.m. broadcast was a ritual: “As long as Arvi was on TV reading the news, the apocalypse wasn’t coming.” Presidents changed, wars flared, but Lind remained a constant.

His final broadcast on October 15, 2003, drew 1.5 million viewers—including Annamaria Urho, who gave birth that same evening. As contractions began, her husband turned up the TV volume to catch Lind’s sign-off over her labor pains. Their son arrived just as Lind’s career ended. “Our family shared this news in our WhatsApp group yesterday,” Urho said of his death.

Lind retired in 2003 after 38 years at Yle, leaving behind a legacy as Finland’s most trusted voice—a man who, in the words of one viewer, made life feel “bigger than itself.”
