The Faroe Islands police have confirmed that a surge of potent and hazardous synthetic drugs spreading across Europe has reached the archipelago, according to Kári Jacobsen, head of the force’s intelligence unit.
The European Drugs Agency (EUDA) has flagged a sharp increase in new, high-risk substances—many of them synthetic cannabinoids—flooding streets in multiple European countries, Jacobsen told Faroese public broadcaster KVF. The agency’s latest annual report tracks over 1,000 such drugs, with at least 7,600 overdose deaths recorded in 29 countries last year alone.
“New substances are appearing almost weekly,” said Lorraine Nolan, EUDA director. “We must do everything in our power to prevent these dangerous drugs from reaching the market.”
EU internal market commissioner Magnus Brunner echoed the warning, stressing the need for urgent action to curb the spread.
