A middle-aged Finnish man intentionally crossed into Russia and returned through a wildlife gate near Tohmajärvi last Saturday, the Finnish Border Guard confirmed, adding that the same individual has been suspected of similar illegal border crossings in the past.
The incident occurred in the Sääperi area of Tohmajärvi, where the man drove to the border zone by car before crossing into Russia on foot, according to Captain Matti Kettunen of the North Karelia Border Guard, who is leading the investigation. The case was transferred from the Southeast Finland Border Guard to North Karelia due to the location of the crossing.
“He crossed through a wildlife gate and returned to Finland via the same point,” Kettunen stated. The suspect, who is not a local resident, has previously been implicated in comparable border violations in North Karelia and Southeast Finland, though he has no prior convictions for such offenses. A single fine was issued in 2025 for a minor border violation after he was apprehended in the border zone.
Border Guard authorities detained the man on Saturday before transferring him to other authorities; he was released from custody on Monday. Under Finnish law, illegal border crossings can result in fines or up to one year in prison.
Kettunen emphasized that the crossing was deliberate, contradicting earlier speculation that it may have been accidental. Surveillance systems identified the man’s vehicle near the border barrier, prompting an immediate patrol response. “We recognized him as someone known to us and established contact quickly,” Kettunen said.
The border zone is marked with yellow signs and barriers, and movement without a permit is prohibited. “If you’re near the border, you must stay alert and follow the markings—straying in by accident isn’t plausible,” Kettunen noted.
