In Denmark, a troubling phenomenon has emerged as self-proclaimed pedophile hunters engage in luring suspected offenders by posing as minors. These encounters often lead to violent assaults and severe humiliations, which are recorded and shared on social media platforms.

Christian Skettrup, a digital investigator from Njord law firm, describes the content of these videos as extremely violent, showcasing individuals being assaulted and humiliated. He notes that the online attention economy drives participants to seek validation through clicks and views, which becomes a form of currency in this context.

The United States has witnessed this trend for years, with the practice evolving to include streaming and advertising these hunts on social media for profit through sponsorships and ad revenue. For instance, influencer Vitaly, who has over 600,000 Instagram followers, actively promotes his participation in such hunts.

The method involves the hunters targeting individuals on platforms like Snapchat and Instagram, posing as underage users to arrange meetings. During these encounters, the suspects face humiliation and violence, often filmed for online distribution.

Both Skettrup and law enforcement warn against this form of vigilante justice, stating that it can hinder police investigations. The national unit for special crimes in Denmark is witnessing a rise in cases of violence and libel, emphasizing that individuals who engage in these activities can disrupt ongoing law enforcement efforts.

Regarding evidence collection, Skettrup notes that much of what is presented in videos is a Snapchat conversation, raising concerns about the lack of substantial evidence for prosecution. He expresses that while vigilante acts may persist, there’s potential to address their digital implications more effectively amid rising concerns over safety on social media.
