Longtime Yle news anchor Arvi Lind, a trusted figure in Finnish broadcasting for over four decades, died Sunday morning at the age of 85.

Lind, born in Lauritsala—a municipality later merged with Lappeenranta—was a familiar presence both in his adopted Helsinki and his hometown region. After growing up in the industrial town, he spent much of his career in the capital, living in Puistola before settling in Vuosaari in his final years.

Colleagues and childhood friends remembered Lind as a tireless, warm-hearted presence. Erkki Sundström and Tapio Kinnunen, who knew him from their youth in Lauritsala, described him as a hardworking multitasker who brought people together. “He was the ultimate host, someone who included everyone,” Sundström said. Kinnunen recalled Lind’s athletic side, joking about a 1,500-meter race where he dropped out from overexertion while Lind finished strong.

In Helsinki, viewers and passersby interviewed by Yle on Narinkkatori Square remembered Lind as a steady, empathetic anchor who handled difficult stories with calm authority. “He was the face you trusted in the news,” said Panu Hetemäki, while Pirjo Kukkonen praised his ability to convey humanity on air.

Beyond broadcasting, Lind remained active in sports and local culture. In 2023, Lappeenranta honored him with a commemorative plaque on its “Walk of Fame,” Marian aukio, alongside other notable figures from the region.
