A new central town square will be built in Tvøroyri after the local council unanimously approved the project, Faroese broadcaster KVF reports. Construction is scheduled for completion by the 2027 mentanarnátt cultural festival.
The design, developed by BRIM architects, will be implemented in phases. The first stage focuses on the western section of the area, improving connections between the square and the parking lot below Sjógøta.
A key part of the work involves removing the road known as Sjúkhúsbrekkan and replacing it with safer pedestrian access, including stairs and other pathways. The square will feature permanent market stalls for vendors, associations, and other groups, along with a small stage for performances, events, and gatherings.
The space will also be adaptable for larger events, such as music festivals, cultural performances, and public gatherings, with provisions for temporary grandstands.
