The annual Hjallerup Market in North Jutland draws up to 250,000 visitors but receives far less media attention than major events like Roskilde Festival or Copenhagen’s Distortion, according to a Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) report.
Writer and music critic Esben Suurballe, a Hjallerup native and market volunteer, argues the event is overlooked despite its scale and cultural significance. “There’s a distortion in attention and prestige,” he said. “Other events carry far greater social and cultural recognition.”
A media analysis found Distortion received nearly three times more coverage than Hjallerup Market this past week, while Northside Festival got five times more and Bornholm’s Folkemødet six times more. Founded in 1744, the market is Denmark’s second-largest annual gathering, featuring stalls, rides, music, and a mix of visitors from across the country.
Suurballe describes it as “one of the great folk festivals where people actually show up,” contrasting it with more polished events that dominate social media. “It’s not as aesthetically pleasing as Roskilde or Folkemødet,” he admitted, “but it’s a festival for everyone.”
Visitor Line Luther from Aalborg acknowledged the market’s unvarnished appeal: “It’s a bit muddy, a bit messy—it’s a market, after all.”
