A surge in adult gamers is reshaping Denmark’s gaming culture, with a first-of-its-kind LAN party for players over 25 taking place this weekend in Rødding, reports public broadcaster DR.

Heidi Mærsk, 49, is among those driving the trend. What began as an attempt to understand her son’s Fortnite obsession during the pandemic has since become her own passion—one that now fills her evenings with competitive matches and social connections. “I started playing to keep up with what my son was doing,” she said. “Now I’m at level 206 in Fortnite, and I play almost daily.”

Her son has long since moved on, but Mærsk has found a new community of adult players. This weekend, she joins Denmark’s inaugural adults-only LAN party, where red wine and relaxed conversation replace the usual youth-centric energy. “It’s different when it’s just adults,” she said. “You can chat freely, have a drink, and really unwind.”

The shift isn’t anecdotal. DGI, a national sports and leisure organization, reports a 48% jump in adult members (ages 25–59) in its esports clubs between 2020 and 2025, from 1,079 to 1,595. Martin Sigvartsen, a 43-year-old board member of esports club Dukes Denmark, which organized the event, notes the change firsthand. “We’re seeing more players in their 40s and 50s at our regular LAN parties,” he said. “Gaming isn’t just for teens anymore—it’s a social outlet, a way to decompress.”

For Mærsk, the appeal lies in the blend of competition and camaraderie. “Instead of sitting alone watching TV, I log on, play a few hours with people I know, and feel part of something bigger,” she said. “It’s not about the kills. It’s about the connection.”
