Danish municipalities are vying to attract new military barracks after the defence chief recommended expanding facilities to accommodate a planned increase in troop numbers, state broadcaster DR reports.
Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus confirmed the government would work to establish additional barracks, naval or air bases across Denmark, following a classified defence ministry assessment obtained by DR. “Of course we need barracks nationwide, and I will push for that,” Bruus told regional broadcaster P4 Fyn, adding that site selections would require further review.
At least six municipalities—Syddjurs, Odense, Nordfyn, Aalborg, Hjørring, and Sønderborg—have expressed interest in hosting facilities. Syddjurs Mayor Michael Stegger Jensen cited proximity to Aarhus Airport and defence contractors Terma and Systematic as key advantages, while Odense Mayor Peter Rahbæk Juel argued Fyn’s existing drone centre and shipbuilding capacity at Odense Harbour made it a “defence desert no more.”
The push follows a defence ministry proposal to expand Denmark’s mobilisation capacity to 180,000 reservists, requiring up to 13,000 conscripts annually—nearly triple current levels. Military analyst Jess Møller Nielsen warned against “local political squabbling,” stressing that sites must offer space for training ranges, simulation centres, and terrain for large-scale exercises, while also being attractive for long-term personnel housing.
Neither the defence ministry nor command has commented on specific locations. The government’s defence strategy, outlined in its coalition agreement, includes a cost-effective drone defence system and rapid-deployment forces for Greenland.
