On Monday afternoon, the Tavastila area in Kotka was hit by a powerful thunderstorm that uprooted trees over a wide area, blocking roads and cutting off power to many residents as trees fell onto electrical lines. As of Tuesday morning, numerous fallen trees remained in the area, along with downed power lines.

Local resident Jouko Karppinen reported that his electricity has been out since Monday afternoon and expressed concern that it might not be restored for quite some time. He noted that while he does not have a freezer, his neighbor does, and is anxious about the food possibly spoiling if power is not restored soon.

According to Tuomas Vasama, maintenance manager at the Southeast Finland ELY Centre, dozens of trees were downed during the storm, and while some roads were cleared by the evening, the cleanup will likely continue into Wednesday. Workers are currently focused on removing trees that have fallen on power lines to ensure the area is safe.

A meteorologist from the Finnish Meteorological Institute indicated that despite the thunderstorm, wind speeds in Kotka did not reach storm levels, with gusts reported at around 15 meters per second. Storm criteria are defined as wind speeds exceeding 21 meters per second. However, local variations in thunderstorms make it challenging to obtain precise measurements for Tavastila.

Karppinen noted that this was the strongest wind event he has experienced in his 20 years living in the area, adding that thankfully, no damage occurred to his property, with only some branches from a neighbor’s larch landing on his roof.
