A man suspected of setting three fires in the basement of a residential building in Salo’s Märynummi district last week has been remanded in custody, the Southwest Finland District Court ruled on Monday.

Police allege the middle-aged man deliberately started the fires at the same address on Hirvitie, each time gathering combustible materials at the ignition points. He was detained in late May and now faces three counts of attempted aggravated destruction of property.

The first fire broke out shortly after midnight the previous Monday, followed by a second blaze the next evening and a third on Thursday of the same week. Authorities had previously stated they suspected the fires were intentionally set due to the deliberate placement of flammable materials.

Investigators are continuing their probe with further interrogations and technical examinations, according to police.
