Copenhagen Municipality will convert 320 parking spaces designated for shared electric vehicles into regular parking spots, following criticism over low usage, Danish broadcaster DR reports.
The move comes after a municipal study found that spaces reserved for shared electric cars—operated by companies like Green Mobility—remained empty more than 75% of the time. The 320 spaces represent roughly one-third of the city’s total dedicated electric car-share parking.
Line Barfod, the city’s climate, environment, and technical affairs mayor, acknowledged the spaces “are not being used to the extent we expected when we established them.” She emphasized the change is temporary, adding that spaces could be reallocated to electric car-sharing as demand grows.
Barfod, a member of the Red-Green Alliance, stated the decision does not conflict with her party’s goal of reducing private car use in the city. “We’re trying to determine what it takes to get more people using shared electric cars,” she said, noting the policy shift reflects a cross-party agreement to proceed more gradually than initially planned.
The deal was backed by a broad coalition including the Red-Green Alliance, Socialist People’s Party, Social Democrats, Conservatives, Danish Social Liberal Party, Venstre, Liberal Alliance, Alternative, and Danish People’s Party.
