A two-year-old boy discovered a revolver and an axe while playing in a side street in Oslo’s Majorstua district on Wednesday afternoon, Dagbladet reports.

The child’s father, who asked to remain anonymous, told the newspaper his son climbed onto a central traffic island and picked up the weapon. “I’ve never held a gun before, but my gut told me this wasn’t a toy. It was heavy,” he said. His immediate priority was to remove his child from the scene as quickly as possible.

Both the revolver and the axe were left unattended in plain view, according to the father, who did not know whether the firearm was loaded. “The idea that something like this could be so accessible to a child is terrifying,” he said. “I keep thinking about what could have happened if it had been loaded and a child mistook it for a toy. Those nightmares won’t leave me.”

Police confirmed to Dagbladet that officers recovered a functional handgun and an axe from the location. Operations manager Christer Martinsen of the Oslo Police District said the weapon “could have been operational,” though investigators have not yet determined how long it had been abandoned or who left it there.

A formal case has been opened, though Martinsen acknowledged such investigations often yield limited results. “The important thing is that no one was harmed and the weapon is no longer on the street,” he said.
