A decision is expected to be made this summer regarding the location of the planned prison in the Faroe Islands.
Seven potential sites have been identified by local municipalities for the construction of the facility. The Prison and Probation Service has conducted a professional assessment of these locations.
Nine municipalities have expressed interest in hosting the prison: Tvøroyrar, Eiðis, Kvívík, Tórshavn, Sunda, Fuglafjørður, Vágar, Nes, and Eystur.
The prison is scheduled to be completed by 2029 and will replace the current detention center in Mjørkadali. This facility currently houses individuals sentenced to less than 18 months. Those with longer sentences are typically sent to Denmark in accordance with standard procedures.
The goal is for all Faroese citizens to serve their sentences within the Faroe Islands once the new prison is operational.
