This year’s Distortion festival in Copenhagen will feature a record number of parties and events, organisers confirmed Wednesday, though they insist noise, waste, and public urination remain under control.
The urban festival—Denmark’s third-largest after Roskilde and Smukfest—kicks off with Distortion X concerts at City Hall Square today, followed by a street party on Vesterbro tomorrow and Distortion Ø on Refshaleøen from Friday. Over 50 organisers have registered events for the Vesterbro celebrations alone, marking the highest tally in the festival’s history.
Despite the scale, director Daniel Toghill told public broadcaster DR that preparations closely follow past editions, with adjustments based on last year’s feedback. “We’re constantly optimising—we know where to place trash bins and toilets—but the core plan remains largely unchanged,” he said.
Distortion introduced “neighbourhood pauses” in 2022, rotating street parties between Copenhagen districts every two years. After two years on Nørrebro, the event returns to Vesterbro this year. While some festival activities, including Distortion X and Ø, require tickets, the Vesterbro street party remains free.
The festival has faced past criticism over noise and public urination. Toghill cited improved waste management as a key focus, noting fewer complaints in recent years. “We’ve scaled up our cleaning plans significantly over the last four to five years,” he said. “Post-event feedback on waste and sanitation has been minimal.”
