A new government-backed app allowing Danish residents over 13 to use their phones as official photo identification launched today, DR reports.
The AltID app, developed by the Agency for Digitisation, provides a digital alternative to physical passports for age verification at venues like nightclubs, bars, and shops. Users must have a valid chip-enabled passport and a MitID account to activate the photo ID function.
Initially, the app will serve as proof of age and identity, with plans to later integrate digital driver’s licenses and health insurance cards—currently separate apps—into a single platform. The service is designed to complement MitID, Denmark’s existing digital authentication system for online logins, payments, and signatures.
