The Swedish government’s push to deport unaccompanied minors has backfired politically, with critics branding its migration policy inhumane, according to an analysis by public broadcaster SVT’s political commentator Mats Knutson.

Despite the ruling Tidö parties’ efforts to tighten migration rules, the controversy over teen deportations has dominated public perception, Knutson wrote in an assessment published Monday. The coalition now hopes a new agreement on the issue will counter accusations of cruelty in its approach.

The analysis follows a recent deal among the Tidö parties—comprising the Moderates, Sweden Democrats, and Christian Democrats—to resume deportations of rejected asylum-seeking minors, a policy they had paused in March.
