Finland’s men’s national ice hockey team launched their gold medal celebrations in the locker room immediately after Sunday’s overtime final win, with captain Aleksander Barkov arriving to a shower of champagne, public broadcaster Yle reported Monday.
The team shared footage of the post-game festivities on social media, including a video from forward Jesse Puljujärvi’s Instagram showing the locker room scene with goal-scorer Konsta Helenius at his side. Players later called into Radio Suomipop’s morning show, where defenseman Mikko Lehtonen and goaltender Joonas Korpisalo confirmed they had not slept but were continuing the celebration in the Norwegian team’s dining hall—Norway having won its first-ever world championship bronze on Sunday.
“Put on the Swiss goal song—it didn’t play in the final, so let’s honor them,” one player said, before urging fans: “Everyone to the square!” The team is scheduled to fly home on a charter flight, then proceed to a reception at the Finnish president’s official residence in Mäntyniemi, Helsinki, ahead of a public victory event.
Finland secured the title with a 1–0 overtime win against Switzerland in Sunday’s final, their second world championship gold in three tournaments.
