A 26-year-old man faces murder charges in Helsinki District Court on Monday in the stabbing death of an approximately 80-year-old man in the Malminkartano district, Yle reports.

The prosecution alleges the defendant, born in 1999, attacked the victim—born in the 1940s—with a knife on Luutnantintie near Malminkartano railway station on the evening of March 18. Authorities state there was no prior relationship between the two men and that no clear motive has emerged.

Investigators describe the killing as exceptionally brutal. The defendant is accused of stabbing the victim at least twice, then repeatedly striking and kicking him over several minutes. After briefly leaving the scene, he allegedly returned to continue the assault and recorded part of the violence on his phone.

The suspect admitted to the killing during questioning and was apprehended at a nearby restaurant. At the time of arrest, his blood alcohol level exceeded 0.2% and tests detected multiple benzodiazepine derivatives, leading to an additional charge of drug use.

Court records show the defendant has prior convictions for violent and drug-related offences between 2019 and 2023. Police gathered surveillance footage from the area following the attack.
