A Stockholm metro train broke down at Östermalmstorg station during the Stockholm Marathon on Saturday, trapping passengers for more than three hours in extreme heat before evacuation, Swedish public broadcaster SVT reports.
Elin Wiman, a passenger on the stranded train, described suffocating conditions that triggered two panic attacks. “It was unbearably hot, almost like there was no oxygen left,” she told SVT.
Aleksander Krajisnik of public transport operator SL acknowledged the failure, stating, “This is deeply regrettable, but we are doing everything we can.”
The breakdown caused widespread disruptions across parts of the metro network due to a faulty carriage, coinciding with the marathon’s peak hours.
