Police fire shots at armed man after knife threat in Fredrikstad

Police in Fredrikstad opened fire on a man after he allegedly threatened officers with a knife, Dagbladet reports. The incident occurred near a family event with many children present.

The suspect was conscious after being shot and has been transported to Kalnes Hospital for treatment, according to Ronny Hellerud Samuelsen, operations manager for Øst Police District. The Specialized Investigation Unit has been notified and will conduct a routine inquiry.

Laila Karlsen, one of the event organizers, told VG that attendees heard a gunshot, causing distress among children. “This is a family event, so it wasn’t pleasant when it happened,” she said. Photographer Andreas Utberg Andersen, who arrived shortly after the shooting, reported that police had cordoned off the area but that the event continued without signs of panic.

Police have not yet provided further comment.
