US nuclear submarine surfaces in Tromsø
The American nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Virginia was docked in Tromsø on Friday, according to tracking data and confirmation from Norway’s defence command.
The vessel was first spotted by local newspaper Nordlys via the MarineTraffic website early Friday, with its position later verified by Dagbladet in the evening. Norwegian defence officials stated the submarine had received diplomatic clearance to resupply and conduct a crew rotation at Grøtsund harbour outside the city.
Vegard Finberg, communications chief at the Norwegian Armed Forces’ operational headquarters in Bodø, confirmed the submarine’s presence but declined to specify its mission. “We can neither confirm nor comment on the nature of the operation,” Finberg said. “The purpose of submarines is to operate covertly, so we do not disclose details—whether they are Norwegian or foreign vessels.”
Finberg described the visit as routine, noting that such calls occur “at irregular intervals” and are preapproved. “When they dock, they do so while surfaced—it’s not as though they suddenly appear at the pier,” he added.
The USS Virginia is a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, though neither US nor Norwegian officials provided further operational details.
