19-year-old charged with attempted murder at Tampere market square
A 19-year-old man has been formally charged with attempted murder following a knife attack in central Tampere, Yle reports. The incident occurred outside a restaurant near Keskustori square in the early hours of a weekend in March.
A second man, aged 18, faces charges of aggravated assault against the same victim, also born in the 2000s. Police confirmed multiple individuals were present during the attack, but only one person was injured. Authorities have not disclosed a motive or the relationship between the suspects and the victim.
The case will proceed to trial at Pirkanmaa District Court on 9 June.
The 19-year-old defendant has a prior criminal record, including convictions for serious offences. As a minor, he was found guilty of robbery, theft, assault, distributing sexually explicit images of a child, and two minor firearms violations.
His crimes escalated after turning 18. In April 2025, he was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for aggravated robbery after beating a victim unconscious and stealing their wallet—a conviction now finalised. Less than a month earlier, he received a five-month suspended sentence for assault and aggravated unlawful restraint, though that ruling remains under appeal. The victim in that case later secured a one-year restraining order against him.
