Former SD politician Katja Nyberg dismissed from Swedish police
Katja Nyberg, the former Sweden Democrats MP turned independent lawmaker, has been terminated from her position with the Swedish police, public broadcaster SVT reported Friday.
Nyberg, who had been on leave from the National Operations Department (NOA) during her time in parliament, faces charges of aggravated unlicensed driving, drunk driving, minor drug use, and drug possession. She has denied using cocaine and driving under the influence.
The dismissal follows a December 2025 incident in which police suspected Nyberg of driving while impaired and seized a bag of white powder. A subsequent hair follicle test detected traces of cocaine, ecstasy, and amphetamine. Her driver’s license was revoked in January after tests confirmed narcotics in her system, though she was later reported to have continued driving.
In a statement to *Polistidningen*, Nyberg called the decision “precipitous,” questioning why urgency was needed given her long-standing leave of absence. “I struggle to understand why there is such haste to dismiss a police officer who has been on leave for a considerable time to fulfill a parliamentary mandate and is not actively serving,” she wrote.
Nyberg left the Sweden Democrats after the December incident but remained in the Riksdag as an independent.
