The Faroese Social Democratic Party has agreed to a 10-year validity period for fishing licences, a compromise reached after internal opposition and prolonged negotiations, Faroese public broadcaster KVF reports.

The party had previously opposed the extension, advocating for an eight-year limit, but relented during coalition talks after all its parliamentary members endorsed the decision. The move has drawn criticism from the party’s South Streymoy branch and former MPs.

Social Democratic leader Aksel V. Johannesen has declined to comment on the matter, despite repeated requests from KVF and other media. Political commentator Árni Gregersen discussed the party’s stance in a radio interview on Thursday.
