A controversial wind turbine and solar farm project in Thisted, Thy, was approved by the municipal council on Thursday, overriding a local referendum in which a majority of residents voted against the plan, Danish broadcaster DR reports.

The decision has led to criticism that the so-called Thy-model—a framework designed to give residents greater influence over local development—has collapsed. The model was introduced to ensure public participation in major infrastructure projects.

Danish Democrats councillor Lars Westergaard, who voted in favour of the project despite his party’s opposition, has since been expelled from the party.
