The Faroese government will not begin formal negotiations over the islands’ constitutional relationship with Denmark until a new Danish administration is in place, prime minister Beinir Johannesen confirmed Thursday.

Speaking in the Faroese parliament, Johannesen reiterated his administration’s commitment to the proposed tjóðarsemja—a revised framework for Faroese-Danish relations—but stressed that talks with Danish authorities would only proceed once Denmark’s next government is formed.

The statement came in response to questions from Sirið Stenberg, leader of the opposition Republic party, who pressed the government on its timeline for engaging with Copenhagen.
