A soda can hidden in a K-Market freezer in Rusko, southwest Finland, exploded on Tuesday evening, damaging cooling equipment and ruining nearby products, with repairs and losses estimated at nearly €3,000, Yle reports.
Store owner Janne Ripatti said employees discovered the blast in an ice cream display after teens had concealed a carbonated drink inside earlier that day. Hours later, the can froze and burst, destroying merchandise and damaging the unit. Surveillance footage captured both the placement of the can and the explosion, with images turned over to police for identification.
Ripatti suspects the incident may be linked to a social media challenge, noting a rise in deliberate vandalism tied to online trends. “This wasn’t accidental—it was clearly planned,” he said, citing past incidents of slashed drink packaging and hidden items filmed for platforms like TikTok. “We’ve even seen thefts staged for content.”
Despite the financial hit, Ripatti emphasized a constructive approach toward local youth. “If I could create a positive viral challenge, I’d do it gladly,” he said. The store, a community hub in the 6,000-person town near Turku, actively engages with young customers—helping with purchases, supporting youth sports, and fostering familiarity to deter theft.
While petty theft and disruptions have surged nationwide—tripling since 2020—Ripatti maintains an open-door policy. “Even if we identify those responsible, they’re still welcome here,” he said. Police confirmed a criminal report was filed but did not specify charges.
