A mass cull of 402 pilot whales took place in Sandagerð on Wednesday, Faroese broadcaster KVF reported Thursday morning.

Kári Thorsteinsson, the local district sheriff, confirmed the kill in a 7 a.m. bulletin, stating that the meat and blubber would be divided between participants and residents. He added that it remains unclear when the distribution will begin.

The cull, known locally as a grindadráp, is part of a long-standing Faroese tradition of driving pilot whales ashore for their meat and blubber.
