Large-scale projects seeking to connect to Denmark’s electricity grid may now face waits of five to ten years, state-owned grid operator Energinet announced Wednesday.

The delay follows a surge in demand that has strained network capacity, prompting Energinet to extend a moratorium on new connections. Originally introduced in March as a three-month pause, the freeze will now remain in place until at least autumn while the operator reassesses its approach.

Energinet attributed the bottleneck to an unexpected acceleration in electrification, driven in part by high-demand projects such as data centres, battery storage facilities, and power-to-X plants. While the shift toward greater electrification was anticipated, the scale and speed of the transition have outpaced projections.
