The Faroese Education Council has requested an additional 1 million kronur to fund 90 extra teaching hours next school year, according to a report by Faroese broadcaster KVF.

The council’s proposal follows plans to add a third-grade class and a tenth-grade class in Fuglafjørður, as well as a tenth-grade class at Eysturskúlin in Tórshavn. However, the Finance Committee approved only half the requested amount, citing budget neutrality concerns.

The council also warned that funding for reading support programs could be reduced by 500,000 kronur as a result.
