SSAB will restart construction at its Luleå steel mill on Wednesday, ending a six-week pause triggered by respiratory symptoms among workers, the company announced in a statement.
Work at the site was halted in early April after about 20 employees reported breathing difficulties. Following extensive testing of soil, air, gases, and machinery—none of which exceeded regulatory limits—SSAB concluded that fine dust exposure, low humidity, and seasonal respiratory viruses were the primary causes of the symptoms.
Operations will resume in phases, beginning with areas where no health issues were reported. The company stated it remains in close contact with contractors, unions, and authorities, adding that the shutdown has not significantly impacted the project’s overall timeline or budget.
