Planned savings from a government restructuring in the Faroe Islands have dropped to 16.3 million krona—well below the original target of 19 to 20 million krona over three years, Faroese broadcaster KVF reports.
The shortfall follows a decision to expand the cabinet from six to seven ministers, despite a reform commission’s recommendation to reduce it from nine to six. Sirið Stenberg and Ruth Vang of the finance committee noted that while the budget increase for the additional minister was justified, it undermined the commission’s cost-cutting goals.
“This raises serious questions about the political commitment to the reform process,” they stated, adding that the savings gap does not reflect on the commission’s work but on subsequent political decisions.
