A fast-moving fire sparked by a gas grill on a fourth-floor balcony destroyed a Helsinki apartment building over the weekend, rendering all 63 units uninhabitable, Finnish police and rescue services reported Monday.

The blaze broke out around 9 pm Saturday in the Kalasatama district, spreading rapidly from the balcony through ventilation gaps in the building’s exterior to the roof, according to preliminary findings. Firefighters deployed nearly 30 units to contain the flames, but the eight-storey structure sustained severe smoke and water damage.

Helsinki police are investigating the incident as aggravated endangerment, though charges may change as the probe continues. The Safety Investigation Authority (Otkes) is assessing whether a formal safety inquiry is needed, comparing the case to a 2020 senior housing fire in Jyväskylä that also originated on a balcony and exposed structural fire-safety flaws.

Residents described chaotic evacuations, with some trapped in smoke-filled apartments for over an hour before rescue. Property manager Lumo has offered temporary housing and crisis support while searching for permanent replacements. A resident meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.
