A metal object lying on Kuutostie highway in Luumäki punctured a truck’s fuel tank Monday morning, causing diesel to spill across a long stretch of the road, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.
The South Karelia Rescue Department confirmed no injuries occurred, but the spill forced the closure of one lane heading toward Lappeenranta. Emergency crews are directing traffic at the scene, located about seven kilometers from Taavetti in the direction of Kouvola.
Cleanup operations are underway, with peat spread over the affected area to absorb the fuel. The spilled diesel appears confined to the roadway, according to duty fire chief Tero Forsman, who estimated the work would take at least an hour. A sweeper may later assist in removing the peat.
Authorities will announce when the lane reopens to normal traffic.
