The Faroese Traffic Board has recommended against increasing the speed limit on the newly completed Havnarvegurin ring road in Tórshavn, despite a push from city councillors to raise it from 60 km/h to 70 km/h, Kringvarp Føroya reports.
Councillor Tróndur Sigurðsson proposed the increase, and the city council referred the matter to its technical committee, which has accepted the proposal. The issue will now be reviewed by the traffic committee, where city engineer Boði Haraldson also holds a seat. In a radio interview on Friday, Haraldson stated that if there is political will to raise the limit, it will be done.
However, Lovisa Petersen Glerfoss, director of the Traffic Board, argued that the road was designed for a maximum speed of 60 km/h and that traffic signs would need to be adjusted accordingly if the limit were raised. She called any decision to increase the speed limit “skewed.”
