Two of Iceland’s largest food retailers are in talks with Faroese meat producer MBM over potential imports, according to a report by Faroese public broadcaster KVF.
Kjörís, an Icelandic dairy producer, and the Krónan supermarket chain have expressed interest in stocking Faroese goods, MBM director Tony Weyhe told KVF. However, Faroese agricultural products currently lack EU health certification—a requirement under the Hoyvík Agreement, the free trade deal between Iceland and the Faroe Islands.
Weyhe met with Faroese employment minister Jacob Vestergaard earlier this year to discuss market access and described the outlook for Icelandic exports as promising. Without EU approval and demand from Icelandic buyers, Faroese products cannot enter the Icelandic market.
