The special education unit Sernám will become a permanent department within the Education Directorate from 1 June, making the provisional arrangement introduced on 1 September 2025 permanent, KVF reports.

Minister of Culture Bárður á Lakjuni made the decision, the Ministry of Culture said. The structural change aims to create greater coherence between special education activities and the education sector as a whole, particularly in primary schools where much of Sernám’s work is concentrated. Collaboration with the preschool and upper-secondary levels, both of which receive advice from Sernám, is also being developed.

Under the new structure, Sernám will operate as a professional department within the Education Directorate, responsible for special education advice, professional development, and cooperation with preschools, schools, and other services. Emphasis will be placed on strengthening inclusion and preventive work. Arrangements are also being made for structured collaboration with Nám, the curriculum authority, in areas such as curricula, further training, and teaching materials.

The Education Directorate will now recruit a department head for Sernám, with the aim of the appointee starting on 1 August.
