The Faroese transport minister has ordered a halt to plans for a new ferry serving the island of Kalsoy in favour of prioritising a subsea tunnel, the national broadcaster KVF reports.
Jacob Vestergaard, the transport minister, has decided to shelve the ferry project and redirect resources toward the tunnel, which supporters say will improve life for families on the island.
Dávur Syderbø and Tórunn Susanne Sømark, a young family currently living in Klaksvík but planning to build a home in the village of Húsar, said the tunnel would give them more time for family life. They described it as a major improvement and a “sweet sound in the ears” of families with children in Kalsoy. The couple currently stay with Dávur’s brother when visiting Húsar.
The decision to stop the ferry project comes despite a declining population in the island in recent years. The family said the right solution was to prioritise the tunnel over a new ferry.
The news was reported on KVF’s current affairs programme “Dagur og vika”.
