The Faroe Islands minister of transport, Jacob Vestergaard, has asked the ferry service Strandferðslan to postpone a tender in connection with the Kalsoy route, according to Kringvarp Føroya.

Speaking at a tunnel meeting organised by residents of Kalsoy on Wednesday evening, Vestergaard said he would not promise a tunnel to the island but would work to ensure the matter was investigated properly so a political decision could be made.

“I will not promise the people of Kalsoy a tunnel, but I will work for this matter to be examined as well as possible, so that a political stance can be taken,” he said.

Vestergaard left no doubt as to which solution he considers more appropriate, pointing to population trends in islands without a fixed connection. He also dismissed the argument that the road network on Kalsoy could not handle traffic from a tunnel, saying the network needed upgrading regardless.

“Some have pointed out that the road network on the island cannot cope with traffic from a tunnel, but that is not a valid argument. The road network in Kalsoy must be upgraded regardless, so it cannot be used as an excuse for not proceeding with a tunnel,” Vestergaard said.

When asked what would happen if the matter were delayed, he replied that he would investigate what is possible before proceeding with a new ferry, but would not say when a possible tunnel might come, as many factors must align, including how a tunnel would fit into the long-term investment plan the government is to draw up.

The meeting at Skúlatrøð was fully attended. Eyðun Eliasen and Bjørn Kalsø welcomed participants, followed by presentations from several speakers. After the meeting, there were questions and comments.
